Book Review: Review by Vesna McMaster (JUN 30, 2011). You could classify The Dante Club loosely as historical fiction. Honestly, this was NOT my favorite book. The story takes place just as the University prepares for its first commencement. The Dante Club by Matthew Pearl My rating: 2 of 5 stars. They met regularly to discuss and review Longfellow's translation and dubbed themselves the Dante Club. I've been spending a lot of time on the road lately, and consequently holed up in motels with little to do but read (which I hardly mind). As I was looking through the internet I came across a book called The Dante Club. Sounded interesting enough, so I looked it up and it has quite the ingenious plot. Or perhaps, try historical-fantasy-fiction-literary-murder-mystery. Thursday June 11th at 8pm the Dante Club opens it's doors to over 20 acts of various styles and talent level. I was bored out of my mind thru the entire book. It is a great book for lovers of literature, history, mystery, and a must read for anyone who loves Dante and The Inferno. Reminiscent of Pearl's earlier work, The Dante Club, his latest novel also involves one of America's most prestigious universities, M.I.T. This is a wonderful an highly engaging book which has so much to offer and so many different levels. Set in Boston during the middle half of the 19th century, the novel is a smart detective story featuring members of the Dante Club, a group devoted to introducing the poet's work to American audiences. Here is an opportunity to see and support local talent. The Dante Club takes us through the changes in Boston wrought by the American civil war including the huge increase in violent crime.
